E.R.Dodds in his “Introduction of Bacchae” stresses that:
If we are to understand the Bacchae, we need to take off our minds the paintings of Titian and Rubens, to forget the verses of Keats about Bacchus: “For wine we follow Bacchus, through the earth, great god of breathless cups and chirping mirth” (Keats, Song of the Indian Maid).
We also need to remember that orgies did not have the same connotations that they have today but they were instead acts of devotion and that to become a ‘Bacchae’ does not mean to have fun but it means to get a particular religious experience- the experience of communion with God, that transforms the human being into a ‘Bacchae’.
